Web 2.0 tops the Gartner hype cycle

Geospatial Semantic Web posted the 2006 Gartner hype cycle for emerging technologies. Mashups, web 2.0 and folksonomies are at the very top of the peak of inflated expectations:

Gartner's 2006 hype cycle

I'm a bit cynical about these things since they often don't stand up to scrutiny (podcasting made the 2005 list but isn't anywhere on the 2006 list). Mashups are more of a technique than a technology, and no one can agree on what web 2.0 means (it's probably not a technology either). But certainly, there are some inflated expectations.

Outlaw has more details. Gartner sells the full report.
