Christmas in New York
Last weekend I got to spend a day in New York. It was my first trip, and a lot of fun despite being short.
I could've squeezed in a lot of sites--and I did spend an afternoon in midtown Manhattan--but I found I was most interested in the people part of the city. So the highlight for me was walking around Brooklyn on Saturday, watching people buy Christmas trees and drinking coffee while vizslas marched past in doggie sweaters.
Surfacing in Manhattan was something of a shock. I knew there would be a lot of people, but I didn't realize how many. Walking through Bryant Park, the pond packed with people teetering on skates, I was quietly thankful for the spacious skating rinks at home. Times Square was like Tim Burton's version of an introvert's nightmare. I generally dislike crowds, but they were... inescapable? I don't really know how to describe all the people. I have insect words--swarming, teeming--but I don't have people words.
My borderline ochlophobia aside, I got to hang out with Liz (who was an awesome host and tour guide), Victor, James, and Tanya (and the people from Razorfish).
(And while I'm doing roll call, I was in Philadelphia earlier in the week and had drinks with Liv, Eddie, Andrew, Kyle, Bill and some others. That was a lot of fun.)
