Moonlight Lily Award

moonlight_lilyMy son (inventor of Crunchbattle) received the literacy award for his grade one class today. They gave him an inscribed copy of Moonlight Lily as a prize. I was (and am) incredibly proud of him. I was saying to a friend that I've never been as proud of any accomplishment in my life as I am of his one award. Maybe I'm just remembering that I never received a literacy award. I think I received a citizenship award once in elementary school (though given my character, that seems unlikely).

Kids learn to read pretty quickly, and it's cool how it unlocks part of the world for them. Though the results are not always what we expect. This is a conversation my son and I had while driving a few months ago:

Him: Daddy, let's get a video.

Me: The video store is kind of far away, buddy.

Him: No it's not. There's one right there... it says "adult... video... store."

Me (decisively): That's not *our* video store.

There are some things you wish they couldn't read.
