Heart Mountain

Yesterday I finally picked up the film from my early July hiking trip to Kananaskis. I drove down to climb Mt. Indefatigable, an easy peak with two summits. I'd planned to climb the true summit and then do a traverse to the smaller southern summit. I ended up hiking to the first major landmark only to find the trail covered in knee-deep snow. A setback, to be sure.

After bailing on Indefatigable, I headed over to Heart Mountain to try to salvage the rest of the day. Pictures and commentary are behind the 'more' link.

The day started on Mt. Indefatigable, in Southern Kananaskis, which was too snowy to climb.

So I moved on to Heart Mountain, a small peak (2135m) east of Banff National Park.

It's a small mountain with some fun, rocky scrambling.

Looking west from the summit of Heart Mountain.

This nameless peak was where I wanted to end up. It's south of the Heart Mountain summit and, obviously, a fairly exhilirating hike.

But I lost my nerve here, just before 5m of vertical downclimbing (after 10m of very steep downclimbing) that I didn't feel like tackling alone.

After returning to the summit, I enjoyed a pleasant, meandering walk down.

A cairn along the downward path.
The whole Heart Mountain excursion took about six hours, and was well worth it.
