13. General Scrap

Since reading Underworld I've started to think we are our waste, as much as we are what we consume. General Scrap Iron & Metals Ltd. is a junkyard, but also a meeting place for garbage entrepreneurs and connoisseurs.

Every weekend people drop off their old appliances, hot water hearers, bathtubs and other trash in front of the General Scrap gates. Then in the evenings, different people come by in trucks and start loading up anything that might be useful--fridges, stoves, whatever. Old men in polyester trousers and mesh baseball hats stroll through checking for parts. They like to chat about a good score they made here.

Monday morning, the scrap yard employees take in everything else and, presumably, re-sell it. Garbage, it seems, is pretty good business.
