11. Sony TC-399

A big reel-to-reel tape deck with chunky knobs that make a reassuring ka-thunk when pressed. It's a beautiful machine (I think so, at least).

ah, the ka-thunk, tis a beautiful thing. i was reminded of this recently when manually placing the needle down on vinyl, feeling the weight of the tonearm in my hand and the little tsist of the needle upon the record that i had made.

so much more satisfying than pressing the plastic play button on the CD player.

what a great differentiator this would be for manufacturers...switches that feel great. just as we value car doors that close with that satisfyingly solid sound.

You're so right, the TC 399 is just like a good old Porsche, I don't want to miss it also.
I have just one problem after 15 (!) years of having fun with this dream machine : the rubber belts are broken and I can't get any spare belts in Germany. Do you have an idea ? Maybe in the U.S. ?!
Thanks a lot !

I just bought a Sony TC 399 in beautiful condition. I was planning on reselling it however, after verifying that it works, I fell in love with the sound quality and the feel "ka-thunk" of the unit. However, I may accept any reasonable offers. I have 16 reel tapes with it as well.

I have a TC 399 and would like to use it for live recording.Does anyone know the Mic impedence?
Thanks

Microphone impedance: My TC399 manual says: "Microphone inputs: sensitivity 0.25mV (-70dB) for low impedance microphone" and that any high-quality low impedance microphone with a phone jack may be used.

I bought my tc 399 new in 1978. Bruce, I made many recordings of choirs and cathedral organs using nothing better than a Radio Shack (Tandy to us in UK)stereo paired mike. I did't realise in those days that you could spend more than the deck cost on mikes, mixers, stands etc.

Mine has a black fascia. I am just getting around to making cds of old recordings. Can anyone recommend any (free?) programmes to remove noise & also to insert track breaks?
