10½ Grand Royal #2
Admittedly, it's not unique or rare, but it's still hilarious. (Full disclosure: I may have awarded some bonus points for the Haystacks Calhoun reference on p. 26.)
Why GR2? For the prose stylings of Bob Mack (currently appearing in GQ, or so I've heard), for the Lee Perry article and interview, for the verbal assault on the Nuge, for the Low-Budget Fa$hion Tip$, for Ricky Powell's NBA All-Star Weekend wrap-up, but mainly for the exhaustive social history of the mullet, from which comes the following quote:
Conceptually, the Mullet is as much a state of mind as it is a haircut. It is possible, therefore, to not have a Mullet but be a Mullet Head (e.g. Phil Collins and O.J. Simpson), just as it is possible to have a Mullet but not be a Mullet Head (e.g. Graham Parker and Thurston Moore). Technically, the Mullet is several haircuts in one, "the best of both worlds," as Roller Derby fanzine once put it. For kids, it's the ultimate Woodstock II 'do: new wave on top, a bit b-boy on the sides and rock steady in the back.
(The entire series of mullet articles is available online. Isn't the mullet coming back?)
