Possible source of inspiration: the late-70s board game Mr. Mouth. (This interesting fact had to be pointed out to me, since I spent most of the late 70s playing Sorry and Trouble. For the first part of the 80s I tried to memorize Trivial Pursuit cards, and when that didn't work out I switched to Dungeons and Dragons. And I quit that long before I started hanging around the arcade in high school.)
