Quotes

This has been on my bulletin board since April 2, 2001, and I think it stands as one of my favourite quotes:

"He was gifted with the special capability of making many mistakes, mostly in the right direction. I envied him this and tried in vain to imitate him, but found it quite difficult to make good mistakes."

- Goro Shimura on Yutaka Taniyama, from the book Fermat's Enigma

Honestly, the value of failure cannot be underestimated.

Below the above quote, I later scrawled these two, er, nuggets:

"The best is the enemy of the good."

- Christina Wodtke

"Like quality, good design is a pervasive concern."

- some guy on SIGIA-l

Also, someone please let me know when my, um, self-conscious writing style gets <cough> tiresome. And while we're on that topic, there's this William Safire article on the arch pause that I should probably re-read.
